Sire: Carlton House, Her Majesty The Queen’s talented son of Street Cry who performed at the highest level in both hemispheres during a racing career that spanned four years. Campaigned in Europe until the end of his four-year-old season by Sir Michael Stoute, Carlton House broke his maiden by nine lengths at two. He returned at three to take the 2000m G2 Dante Stakes, a Derby trial, at York in impressive fashion. Carlton House duly headed to Epsom to take on the best of his generation in the Blue Riband, and, as a short-priced favourite, put up a superb performance to finish third, beaten just a length after losing a shoe and getting caught wide. He rounded off his season with a close fourth in the G1 Irish Derby at the Curragh three weeks later.
Victorious in the G3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes at his first start at four, Carlton House headed to Royal Ascot where he finished a tremendously brave second to So You Think in the 2000m G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. He beat five G1 winners that day, including Farah, who retired as the best older horse in Europe in 2013; Reliable Man and Planteur. Carlton House rounded off his European career with a fourth behind triple G1 winner Excelebration in the G1 QEII Stakes.
Carlton House then travelled to Australia to be trained by Gai Waterhouse at Randwick. At Sydney’s Autumn carnival earlier this year, Carlton House was quick to demonstrate the depth of his talents when contesting the G1 Ranvet Stakes over 2000m against Australasia’s best weight-for-age horses. Dashing clear with a superb turn of foot once entering the straight, Carlton House was agonisingly denied victory in the final stride by Champion Silent Achiever but once again had multiple G1 winners behind him in the form of Dundeel, Hawkspur, Fiorente, Foreteller and Gondokoro.
Carlton House finished third at his final start - fittingly in the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick. He retires with earnings close to $1.3million and 11 of his 15 starts were at G1 or G2 level. He defeated no less than 26 G1 winners during his career.
Bred by Darley, Carlton House is one of five winners out of the G2-winning Bustino mare Talented. His sire Street Cry has enjoyed tremendous success in the southern hemisphere, siring multiple G1 winner Whobegotyou, last year’s G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Long John and Melbourne Cup winner Shocking.
